Bicycle parking in Jakarta / Parkir sepeda di Jakarta

February 8, 2012

parkir sepeda di Pasar Festival

Many Jakartans own bikes and enjoy riding them. But obstacles to using them as everyday transportation include 1) the lack of infrastructure – for example, bike paths, parking areas, storage areas on trains or buses – and 2) the lack of information about the infrastructure that exists. The following list, which I’ll update as my experience grows, is meant to help address the second issue. Similarly, Bike2Work has a map; unfortunately, some of the information is out-of-date, and the descriptions of parking areas don’t specify whether they’re open to the public. If you know of another location, please tell me using the form below, and I’ll add it to this list. (Thanks to everyone who has already contributed information!)

Parkir sepeda that contributors or I have observed or used (all are open to the public):

  • Stasiun Gambir, also Halte Gambir (busway) and Monas (Monumen Nasional)
    • installed May 2012
    • directly to the south of the train station and north of a motorcycle-parking area, near the entrance from Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur.
    • as the large yellow sign indicates, riders park at their own risk, but it’s a busy area with guards in the vicinity.
  • CityWalk / CityLofts – Jl. KH Mas Mansyur
    • reported June 2012
    • “Basement 3, near the motorcycle parking area ticket booth. … The bicycle parking area is basically just a horizontal bar where you could hang your bike by the saddle.”
    • “Open to public and free of charge. Not sure about operating hours, would probably be the same as the Citywalk operating hours.”
  • Epicentrum Walk
    • used March 2012
    • on the sidewalk in front of the mall, to the right of the main entrance, in front of Liquid Exchange.
    • It seems pretty safe, because several car-parking guards are a few yards away, and a Blue Bird taxi stand is right by it.
  • Pasar Festival
    • used March 2012;
    • under the pedestrian bridge from Jl. Rasuna Said; directly in front of the POSKO.
  • Grand Indonesia Shopping Town (GIST) – two parking locations: East Mall and West Mall
    • West Mall
      • used April 2012
      • outdoors, near the entrances to The Coffee Bean and Mad for Garlic, on the south side of the space between the East and West buildings.
      • No specific guard seems assigned to it, but the area is open, well-attended by the public, and frequently traversed by mall employees.
    • East Mall
      • used March 2012
      • MOVED! GIST has a wonderfully painted bike lane that leads from the main entrance to the East building into the parking garage. Unfortunately, because the parking area has been moved, toward the end of the route you’ll need to turn right (where the pavement turns red), even though the painted route continues straight. Then you continue a short way to the motorcycle parking area, which has signs indicating “khusus parkir sepeda.” Walk your bike past the parking ticket booth (no need to pay or get a ticket), through the multitudes of motorcycles, to the back, where several bike racks await.
      • During business hours (up to 10 pm, according to the sign) a guard is there to register you. I once returned a little after 10 pm; the guard was gone, but I still retrieved the bike.
  • eX
    • used March 2012
    • on the ground floor, just outside the south side of the parking lot, by the motorcycle-parking area. Possibly it’s easier from Jl. Kebon Kacang 30, but I came in via the main entrance on Thamrin. A guard indicated that I should veer left instead of going up to the main entrance. Then I went through the parking garage to the south side.
    • According to a parking guard at Plaza Indonesia, this is the closest parkir sepeda. It seemed to be basically unguarded, although parking attendants roam throughout the area and were generous with their advice on where and how to lock my bike.
  • UI Depok, Gedung Rektorat, and probably many other places
    • seen October 2011
    • behind the building, on the ground floor
    • unguarded
    • Possibly you can park at any of the stands lending bikes to students, faculty, and staff for free.
  • Kuningan City?
    • used February 2012
    • at the eastern entrance, entering off Gatot Subroto
    • BUT this parking area, which featured a guard who registered my bike, apparently existed due to a bicycle exhibition inside. It would be sad but not surprising if, at other times, they provided no bicycle parking.
  • Pacific Place– used March 2012
    • On the southwest corner, away from both Gatot Subroto and Sudirman. It’s outdoors, accessible directly from the sidewalk. If looking at Potato Head restaurant from the sidewalk, turn right and go to the corner.
    • A parking guard stationed in the adjacent booth asked for my ID and apparently registered me.
    • Apparently it’s available at all times.
  • Galeria SCBD
    • seen April 2012
    • Two locations:
    • In the parking lot of a shopping center across from west side of Electronic City (coordinates = -6.226673,106.810388).
      • Just past parking-guard’s booth, at “Pintu Utara”
    • In front of each bicycle shop, including Rodalink, on the south side.
      • There’s no guard nearby, although perhaps people in the stores provide a deterrent to theft.
      • It’s unclear whether the racks are reserved for customers.
  • American Club
    • used March 2012
    • Inside the walls, past the security checkpoint and past the tennis courts.
    • Not guarded directly but overall security seems tight.
  • Senayan City
    • seen April 2012
    • Enter from Jl. Asia Afrika, using the driveway that goes into a garage under the Panin Tower sign, at the northern edge of the mall. There are signs and a painted bike lane that lead to racks on the right (north) side.
    • It’s across from a guarded lot for motorcycles.
  • fX
    • seen April 2012
    • Two locations:
      • Enter off of Sudirman. The racks are straight ahead, at the corner of the mall.
      • Enter off Jl. Pintu Satu Senayan (between fX and the park). Follow the painted bike lane to a rack across the driveway from the mall’s main entrance.
    • Neither location is guarded directly but guards and other employees are around, and both locations are open and busy.
  • Margo City, Depok
    • seen April 2012
    • Enter the driveway north of the main entrance. A sign on the right will point you toward a patio outside (on the west side of) the Old House Coffee shop, where two racks await.
    • The location isn’t guarded directly, but guards, other employees, and shoppers are around, and the locations is open.
  • Pluit Junction
    • reported December 2012
    • “Located exactly at the main lobby, at here you can leave your bike and go shopping without anxiety. There is a parking bar located just before the main entrance of the mall, I feel safe because the entrance security officer is always there to keep an eye on my bicycle. Anyway it was fun that you don’t need to walk so far from the parking site to the mall, it’s just steps away!”
    • “Free, but no ticket system. Just remember to bring your own lock.”
  • Central Park Mall
    • reported December 2012
    • “The bicycle parking here is also very nice, close to the main lobby, in a public area, and special parking bars are provided. The place is bright and clear, so you don’t need to worry about your bike going missing.”
    • “Free, but no ticket system. Just remember to bring your own lock.”
  • Gandaria City Mall
    • reported December 2012
    • “As I far as I know, bicycle parking is also provided at Gandaria City mall, but I don’t have experience there. Maybe you should try it once.”
  • Kemang Village
    • reported May 2013
    • “Located in the same area with motorcycle parking lot. Free of charge.”
  • La Piazza Kelapa Gading
    • reported February 2014, used in 2013
    • “These bicycle parking spaces are open and free for the public. There’s also a guard (satpam) standby near the bicycle racks at La Piazza’s lobby opposite the BCA building.”
  • Binus University, Syahdan Campus
    • reported July 2014 by Lanny, used in June 2014
    • “Open to the public. You will have to register with the security guard office (near the bicycle park) and receive a parking ticket that will have to be returned when you leave.
    • “But no parking fee is applied.
    • “Campus is closed at 10 pm, but a security guard will still be around to open the gate for you.”
  • Cilandak Town Square
    • reported and used in October 2015 by Danu
    • “They got a parking spot for bicycles right in the middle of the plaza there. When the plaza is used for incidental events, the parking stands are moved downstairs near the UMKM (Micro Local Business) section.
    • “At first, around 2013 they don’t have any, and I was asked to parked it next to the motorcycle section.  But they provided a dedicated bicycle parking since then.
    • “No Cost! GRATIS”

Bicycles allowed unofficially in motorcycle area:

  • Plaza Semanggi
    • reported April 2012 by bummblebees
    • “Plaza semanggi has bicycle parking area. The parking area shared with motorcycle parking area located at the basement 1 near giant supermarket.”
    • (I had been told by employees in March 2012 that none existed.)
  • Setiabudi Building (Kuningan)
    • reported June 2012
    • “The security guard at Setiabudi Building (Kuningan) wasn’t sure whether or not they have a bicycle parking area, but told me to ‘park’ my folded bike near the guard post and said that he would watch over it. I gave him ‘Uang Rokok’ afterwards of course. Not sure if he’d be willing to do the same for non folding bikes though.”
  • Emporium Pluit Mall
    • Reported December 2012
    • “Parking your bike here won’t be a nice experience. I expect bicycle parking to be provided as a basic need, and although there is no special parking site, I ask an officer and usually they lead me to the motorbike parking. I chain my bike near any fence or permanent building features. But once, the officer told me to park it at the staff parking area, which is farther away but very spacious. At first I felt that this place was safer because it was not a public area. But when I was about to leave, a staff member asked me whether my visit to the mall would be long, because he was afraid for the manager to find out.”

Security

Thus far, I have not seen a bicycle missing a wheel or seat – the common indications of theft. However, a Bike2Work member has assured me that theft is rampant. Every lock I’ve seen so far is a flexible cable or chain; I appear to the be lone U-lock user.

No parking

Places that I have visited and where I’ve been told by employees that there is no bicycle parking (“belum”):

  • Monas (Monumen Nasional) – as of May 2012, only at Stasiun Gambir
  • Sarinah– March 2012
    • Attendants offered to let me park my bike in an ad hoc manner, such as locked to a sign post.
  • Stasiun Cikini – March 2012
  • Plaza Indonesia– March 2012
    • But eX, which is connected, does have racks (see above)
  • BRI (on Sudirman) – March 2012
  • Thamrin City – April 2012
  • Ratu Plaza – April 2012
  • STC Senayan– April 2012
    • Despite the numerous high-end bicycle shops inside.

Gosh Mr. Duvall – I’d like to ride my bike in Jakarta, but can’t get across this water obstacle. Pontoon wheels perhaps? David B.

I certainly do not know the final answer to your question. But I suspect that you can park there without problem. Good luck!
